Much of Dallas’ history is evident in Uptown’s four contiguous cemeteries. Greenwood, originally a Protestant cemetery, is Dallas’ second oldest official burial ground. It opened in 1874 and incorporates the order of the King’s Daughter’s Charity Burial for the indigent. Across Hall St. lies Calvary Cemetery which is owned by the Catholic Diocese and was the resting place for many European immigrants. Across the fence is Temple Emanu-El Cemetery, where many luminaries of Dallas’ Jewish community are buried. Freedman’s Memorial contains the unmarked reinterment site of thousands of African Americans relocated during the reconstruction of Central Expressway, with shameful but historic ties to slavery dramatically illustrated in sculpture and poetry on the site.
